A NIE is required for virtually any significant activity in Spain
If you are a citizen of a country that is a member of the European Union (EU), then you should apply for a NIE identifier number (número de identificación de extranjero) within 3 months of arriving in Spain.
However, if you are not an eu citizen, then you will eventually need your NIE number when you apply for residency.
If you wish to buy a property in Spain legally all you need is NIE number, a número de identificación de extranjero. Since buying a property is a transaction, your tax identifier number must appear on all your documentation that is issued in Spain.
Different situations require different approaches to obtaining your NIE
